-The number of tablet users in the US has doubled between 2011 and 2012. eMarketer estimates that over the course of that year, the tally of US tablet users grew from 33.7 million to 79.1 million. eMarketer estimates that by 2016, the number of US tablet users will reach 154.5 million.

– Though Apple’s iPad will continue to dominate the tablet market, recent tablet launches from Amazon, Google and Microsoft will spur consumers across the US to purchase tablets for the first time.
– Between 2011 and 2012, the number of US iPad users increased 83.6% to 51.3 million.
– Adults between the ages of 25 and 54 make up the core US tablet audience and accounted for 60% of all users in the US in 2012.

eMarketer has released a new report, “Kids Online: Digital Natives in Digital Homes” and reveals:
– 45% of kids younger than 12 will be internet users this year and by 2016 the percentage will rise to 50%, with the number increasing from 23.2 million in 2013 to 26.4 million in 2016.
– Sesame Workshop conducted a survey looking at the amount of time kids spent with digital devices. For children in the 0 to 8 age group, kids were spending an average of 3.1 hours per week using a computer.
– According to Ipsos MediaCT’s polling of 6- to 12-year-olds, 54% of those with access to an internet-enabled phone said they used it to play games.
– Once kids reach school age, many parents want them to be reachable by phone, but most don’t want their child walking around with an expensive, web-enabled device.
– In a JWT poll fewer than half the parents agreed that “My child spends too much time online.” Then again, 68% said they “wish my child would log off and engage more with the real world.”

I have been an avid reader of Seth Godin’s books for the past fifteen years and attended his 2010 presentation for his book, Linchpin. When Seth announced that he would be releasing a new book, The Icarus Deception, I could not pass it up.
If you have read Seth’s books and seen him intervieweed you know what Seth is about.
Some takeaways:
– Revolutions destroy the perfect
– Learn to see the world differently
– If failure is not an option than neither is success
– No one has ever created anything on a Blackberry
– Your job is not to be busy but to do that thing that may fail

During this holiday season your email inbox will receive more email than any other time of the year. This Wall Street Journal article provides details on what retailers are doing to make sure you are opening up their emails and making a purchase.
– Average consumer receives about 38 promotional emails each week during the holidays says Chad White, research director at Responsys.
– Stores time the arrival of their emails and design them with attention-grabbing subject lines, personalized messages.
– Emails used to arrive mid-morning but now with smartphones may arrive as early as dawn.
– One hook is the subject line creates make or break moment where customer is saying, ‘Do I keep it or do I dump it?” says Shelley Perelmuter of Gap Inc.
– Emily Bidwell of Etsy (one of six staffers that design emails) subject lines playing off song titles are often big draws one recently was “The Final Countdown”
What are the results?
Response rates vary, but consumers overall open only about 22% according to the Direct Marketing Association.
The big kicker is that only 1.5% of emails result in a purchase.
